Cordless Roller Shades
Cordless roller shades are window coverings that operate without the need for traditional cords. Instead of using cords to raise or lower the shades, these window treatments are equipped with a spring-loaded mechanism or other innovative technology that allows for easy and safe operation. Cordless roller shades offer several advantages:
- Safety: One of the primary reasons for choosing cordless roller shades is safety, especially in homes with children or pets. Traditional corded window coverings can pose a strangulation risk, and cordless options eliminate this hazard.
- Clean Look: Cordless roller shades provide a clean and streamlined appearance because there are no visible cords hanging down. This minimalist design can enhance the overall aesthetic of a room.
- Ease of Use: Operating cordless roller shades is typically straightforward. Many designs allow users to simply pull the shade down to cover the window or push it up to reveal the window. Some may have a spring mechanism or a slow-rise feature for controlled and smooth movement.
- Convenience: Cordless roller shades are convenient to use, making them a popular choice for those who want an efficient and hassle-free window covering solution.
- Versatility: Cordless roller shades come in various materials, colors, and opacity levels, allowing you to customize them to meet your specific needs for privacy, light control, and decor.
- Motorized Options: Some cordless roller shades can be upgraded to include motorized or smart home automation features. This allows you to control the shades remotely using a smartphone, tablet, or voice commands.
When considering cordless roller shades, be sure to check the specific features and options offered by different manufacturers. Additionally, you may want to consider factors such as the material of the shades, light-filtering capabilities, and insulation properties based on your preferences and needs.
Due to Health Canada new Corded Window Coverings rule, corded roller shades are not as convenient to operate anymore as a large portion of the continuous cord loop is covered in a shroud with on a total length of 20 cm of cord exposed (10 cm for front and 10 cm for back cord).
So, what are the specific details on available options for cordless mechanisms for roller shades?
- Old-style tug-and-release cordless lift for roller shades: Some manufacturers still offer this form of Cordless Lift as the mechanism is the cheapest option for cordless lift. However, this style of cordless lift cannot stop at precise positions and the spring mechanism has been prone to failure after repeated use. We general do not recommend this type of tug-and release cordless lift system.
- Ultra Cordless Lift mechanism: This is a newer cordless lift mechanism that relies on simple finger push up and finger pinch pull down. The roller shades will stop at the position where your finger stops pushing or pulling, allowing for precision positioning. The mechanism is more durable too. However, pricing for this lifting option is higher than the tug-and-release cordless lift.
- Motorized automatic lift: With motorized automatic lift option, there are no cords for the roller shades. There are a number of motorized options depending on power source (hardwired, rechargeable battery, plug in power), and control and smart home integration requirements. At the basic level, a simple remote control with a push of a button can control the shade. Some may want to control with an app on the smartphone and tablet or even voice control with Amazon Alexa, Google Home or Apple HomeKit compatible speakers. At the professional grade smart home system like Control4 or Crestron, one may want to use their app to also control the roller shades.
